ICFES English Strategy: Skimming & Scanning
1. SKIM
(60 segundos)
2. LEE LAS PREGUNTAS
(No las opciones aún)
3. SCAN
(Busca palabras clave)
4. VERIFICA
(Lee el contexto exacto)
Demostración Práctica:
Texto de prueba: "Elephants are the largest existing land animals. Three living species are currently recognized: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant, and the Asian elephant. They live up to 70 years in the wild."
- Paso 2 (Pregunta): How many species of elephants are currently recognized?
3. Workshop 1: The Impact of Fast Fashion
Instrucciones: Aplica el Skimming (60 segundos). No traduzcas todo. Luego, usa Scanning para responder las 5 preguntas.
Fast fashion has completely changed the way people buy clothes. Two decades ago, shopping for clothes was an occasional event, usually happening four times a year when the seasons changed. Today, however, clothing brands produce new collections every single week. This means clothes are cheaper and trendier, but this system has a dark side.
The environmental impact of fast fashion is massive. The fashion industry is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions, and nearly 20% of wastewater. Producing a single cotton t-shirt requires approximately 2,700 liters of water. Furthermore, when cheap clothes are thrown away, they end up in landfills where synthetic materials like polyester can take hundreds of years to decompose.
In addition to environmental problems, the fast fashion industry often relies on poor working conditions. Many large brands manufacture their garments in developing countries where labor laws are weak. Workers often face long hours, unsafe environments, and very low salaries. Recently, consumers are becoming more aware of these issues and are demanding sustainable alternatives, such as buying second-hand clothes or supporting ethical brands.
4. Workshop 2: The Evolution of Video Games
Video games have evolved dramatically since their creation. In the early 1970s, the first commercial arcade video game, Computer Space, was released, followed shortly by the massive success of Pong in 1972. During this era, graphics were extremely simple, consisting of white blocks on a black screen. People had to go to public arcades and insert coins to play.
The 1980s introduced the "Golden Age" of home consoles. Companies like Nintendo released systems that allowed people to play in their living rooms. Famous characters like Mario and Pac-Man became cultural icons during this decade. The focus shifted from achieving the highest score to completing complex levels and stories.
In the 1990s, the introduction of 3D graphics completely transformed the industry. Personal computers (PCs) became popular gaming platforms. Later, in the 21st century, the internet changed gaming forever. Multiplayer online games allowed players from different continents to compete in real-time. Today, mobile gaming on smartphones is the largest sector of the market, making video games accessible to billions of people worldwide.
